Social Report

The summer season is always the busiest time in the Club's social calendar with Cowes Week being the highlight of the year. 2007 was no exception. The Week started, as always, with the Cocktail Party on Sunday when several hundred members and guests enjoyed the balmy summer's evening and really got into the swing of things, initially with the Town Band playing on the apron, and then later more live music with The Enormous Small Band in the marquee until the early hours. The CCYC Cocktail Party has for many years been the envy of other Clubs in the town. I have often heard people say that they would not miss it for anything - it is the place to be on the Sunday of Cowes Week.

We took note of the comments last year regarding not enough food, and I am sure that you will agree that there was plenty to go round this year, with titbits to nibble on until well into the evening. We also improved the bar facilities with no less than four bars on the go at once, which cut down the queues for drinks considerably. Particularly popular was the Magners trailer bar on the apron so that it was not even necessary to leave the sunshine to get a drink. Ian Miller, the Bar Committee Chairman, being a Real Ale man himself, made sure that Real Ales were available from all but one bar.

There is no doubt that the Jazz Evening on Wednesday, which was a new event for us, proved to be a resounding success. Jacqui Dankworth was top of the bill with plenty of supporting artistes and it was a sell out. Again, the weather gods smiled on us and it was a glorious warm evening so that members and their guests could spill out onto the apron but still hear the music with the marquee sides being opened up. Some brought their own picnics while many availed themselves of the choice of fare available from Lee's Barbeque sizzling away outside the Clubroom. The aroma of fried onions, succulent beef, pork and burgers wafting across the apron made your mouth water. It was particularly good to see so many old friends present, some who have not been seen around the Club for some time. Although it was getting quite late into the evening by the time Jacqui appeared on stage, it was well worth the wait and quite a coup for the Club.

As usual, Lee's breakfasts proved popular, clearly indicating that the best way to start a day's racing is with a full English inside you.

The marquee was also put to use for various other functions during the Week, which all add to the atmosphere as well as helping to swell the Club coffers.

Things go a little quiet after the mad rush of August, which is no bad thing as it enables us to draw breath ready for the autumn programme, which this year has been very popular. We try to arrange one event each month, and I am please to say these have all been well supported by members. As I write this we have just had the Laying Up Supper, a semi formal event with members sitting down to a three course meal in the clubroom. A good opportunity to swap yarns as to how the season has gone, whether you avidly race round the cans, leisurely potter around the Solent or even enter the Fastnet Race.

None of these events would take place if it was not for the hard work of a small band of helpers. Tickets have to be designed and printed, menus planned and discussed with the caterer, bands and DJs booked, seating plans worked out to ensure that members who ask to sit together do so and are not on different tables. That is all beforehand, then, on the day of the event, the Clubroom has to be set up and decorated, the meal prepared and served, not to mention it all having to be cleared away afterwards. I do not propose to single out any individuals but suffice to say a heartfelt 'Thank you' to all those who help to make the social side of the Cowes Corinthian such a success.
